A helmet is more than protective gear for a goaltender. Just ask Michal Neuvirth. After practice last week, the Czech goalie talked about his new gear, which literally express both sides of his identify.
Neuvirth came up with the basic idea, which he commissioned from an artist in Sweden. “It was my idea,” he said. “I talked to them on the phone and email. He sent me pictures, and I told him what I like and what I don’t like.”
The mask is spilt into two parts with one side featuring images of Washington, DC and the other with images of Neuvirth’s native Czech Republic. The top of the mask features the Capitals wordmark and the chin displays Neuvirth’s nickname “Neuvy”.
“We are always doing half and half,” he said. “You know the first half is my country and the other half is about Washington and Capitals.”
